Interview with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf - PBS

PBS recently published an interview with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf for their Frontline program. This interview was conducted in September 2006 and he talks about “tyranny” and “incompetence” on both sides and offers his prescription for creating more common ground.

Q: Linden MacIntyre: What are the roots of Muslim rage?

A: Hamza Yusuf: If you had one word to describe the root of all this rage, it’s humiliation. Arabs in particular are extremely proud people. If you look at what happened in Lebanon recently, the Arabs kind of raised their head– they think it’s a big victory, the fact that their whole country was destroyed and over a thousand people were killed, many of them children. Why is it a victory? Because they fought back. That’s all. “OK, you can crush us into the Earth, but you’re not going to get us to submit.” And I think that’s deeply rooted in Muslim consciousness, the idea of not submitting to anything other than God. “You can abuse me, but you’re not going to win me over. But if you treat me with respect and dignity, I’m going to fall in love with you. I’m going to sing your praises all over the world because you’re powerful and you treated me with human dignity.”

Q: Where do they see the proof of the humiliation?

A: It’s everywhere. You don’t think it’s humiliating to have a foreign force come into your land? You see, Muslims don’t have this nation state idea. There’s a tribe called Bani Tamin. It’s one of the biggest tribes in Saudi Arabia and in Iraq, and they’re intermarried. The West doesn’t seem to understand that. The Moroccans feel the Iraqi pain as their own. It’s one pain. So when you see some American soldier banging down a door and coming into a house with all these women in utter fear who’ve done nothing, that’s humiliation, and it’s going to enrage people. And what are we doing there? There are no weapons of mass destruction. They were never a threat to us. You know, Shakespeare wrote a play called Julius Caesar, and it was all about the danger of pre-emptive strikes. Brutus is convinced by Cassius to kill Caesar. Why? Because Caesar’s ambitious, because he might declare himself king. And the end of that play, everybody dies; it’s just disaster. That’s the tragedy of pre-emptive strikes.

This final work of the greatly revered Martin Lings opens with an
insightful autobiographical account of his own interior journey, the
finding of a spiritual master, and the conclusions he ultimately
reached regarding the inner life and Islam. The 96-year-old author, a
respected British scholar, recounts the lessons learned from his life
including the answers to profound questions such as: How did I come to
put First things First?, What is the Spiritual Significance of Tears
and Laughter?, What is the Spiritual Significance of Civilization?,
What is the Qur'anic Doctrine of the Afterlife?

Prior to publication of this volume, its distinguished author, Martin
Lings, did in fact "return to the Spirit" on May 12th 2005. This has
occasioned the addition to this work of an "In Memoriam" appendix.
Readers will be treated to tributes that have arrived from the world
over written by those who simply read and loved his work to those who

In Islam, health is actually not seen to be of the body, but rather the
state of the heart. There is a hadith in which the Prophet, peace be
upon him, said, “There is a lump of flesh in the body, if it is sound
the whole body is sound. Is it indeed the heart.” He was not talking
primarily of the physical body or the physical heart but of the
spiritual body and the spiritual heart. A man can be suffering from a
terrible disease and considered to be in excellent health in Islam,
while another can be in perfect bodily health but determined to be sick
according to the Qur’an. In fact, a hallmark of hypocrites is the
excellent appearance of their bodies, “Their outward forms are pleasing
to you.” But the Qur’an says of them, “In their hearts is a disease.”
True health is the state of one’s heart with God. The heart is healthy
when it is filled with trust, love, charity, compassion, lack of
material desire, patience, hope, awe of God, and most importantly,
gratitude.

It is diseased when filled with suspicion, envy, hatred, anger,
pride, anxiety, hopelessness, and ingratitude. But the health of the
body is also important and Islam prohibits its neglect for many
reasons, the least of which is one does not function well in the world
when handicapped by ill health.

From leaders of America's Christian Right seemingly forgetting that "Blessed are the Peacemakers," to Jewish rabbis watching unflinchingly as collective punishment is doled out to Arabs in Palestine, to Muslim jurists ruling that civilian victims are acceptable under a Just War, the three great Abrahamic faiths are increasingly facing accusations of ignoring the sanctity of life. Some, pointing perhaps to Malcolm X when he famously advised a group of black nationalists to, "Leave your religion at home," are not surprised, believing religion is best at dividing, not uniting; others argue, often just as persuasively, that this new penchant the religious have for the immediacy of violent solutions is bred from ideas other than those rooted in sound religious tradition. The same Malcolm X, after all, boldly argued from Mecca that only a belief in the Oneness of God could harmonize a discordant America. We believe that this blog was one of the first to be published by an Islamic media organization distributing products to benefit the community. The Fall and Rise of the Ummah - Imam Zaid

Alhambra Productions strives to be at the forefront of new technologies. We released an MP3 CD in 2004 entitled “The Rise and Fall of the Ummah” by Imam Zaid Shakir. With the expanding iPod generation upon us, it is no wonder this release has been immensely popular. This single CD contains the complete 8 week class taught by Imam Zaid in the Zaytuna Institute. This CD has over 11 hours of audio!

We have received a lot of feedback from users of the famous iPod and other MP3 portable players. They have remarked how wonderful it is to be able to transfer the files from the CD to their players. For those without an iPod or similar device, you can still play this release on your computer with a media player. Some new CD players are MP3 CD compatible.

Trip report: Reviving the Islamic Spirit 2005

Here is a brief overview of the excellent time we had at the amazing Reviving the Islamic Spirit event in Toronto, Canada. We had a great time at our booth (especially since the organizers were so gracious to upgrade us to a better location!). We were impressed with the local Canadian community. We were also surprised to meet some fellow Muslims and non-Muslims from the US. One highlight was when a brother informed us that he was ready to take his shahada (testimony of faith) and become a Muslim. Another highlight was meeting and having a meal with Raihan. Not only they fantastic artistes but also wonderful human beings. They were humble and kind. It was an honor to have met pioneers in Islamic media. Even our friends, Native Deen, recognized Raihan for being the forerunners in the current generation of Islamic artistes. And of course, we also had the blessed opportunity to be with our beloved teachers, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Imam Zaid Shakir.

Other notable scholars we met include:

Shaykh Abdullah Bin Bayyah - it was under guidance and Shaykh Hamza that our new friend took his shahada. Shaykh Abdullah conducted several sessions of beneficial lectures in the Convention as well as the Knowledge Retreat.
Dr. Zakir Naik - we were blessed to have sat with Dr. Zakir for a brief moment.

Shaykh Mohammad Jebril - another brief encounter with a world famous Quran reciter.
Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq - another brief encounter but we have heard so much about him, we had to meet him and extend our salaam from the Bay Area community.

Shaykh Abdullah Adhami - What a wonderful and humble person. He has been a great influence ever since we heard him on the Sacrifices CD. A must buy!

Dr. Abdul Hakim Jackson - It was a tremendous honor to meet such a prolific scholar.

Other people we met:

Native Deen - as mentioned above. We had met earlier at the Virginia Minara Program, so it was good to see them again.

Sami Yusuf - check out his new album here.
Moez Masoud - our dear friend said we had to meet him. So we did. He’s cool.

We also met up with friends from Meem Music, Ihya Foundation, SunniPath. We also made some new friends!

Becoming Muslim

One highlight of the Reviving the Islamic Spirit convention was when 2 friends approached us at our booth. They informed us that one of them would like to take his shahada and become a Muslim. The brother told us that he has benefitted from listening to Shaykh Hamza's material.

After informing Shaykh Hamza, we were invited to visit him in his hotel room. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find Shaykh Hamza and Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah waiting for us. Alhamdulillah, our new brother became a Muslim with his best friend nearby alongside two luminaries. It was an honor for Alhambra Productions to witness this amazing moment.

Reviving the Islamic Spirit in Toronto

The Alhambra Productions staff are in Toronto, Canada for one of the largest annual conventions in Canada. Reviving the Islamic Spirit Convention is organized by the youth from the Great Toronto Area. This year's line-up of scholars include Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Imam Zaid Shakir and many more. You can view the full line-up here.

We are honored to be so welcomed by our Canadian brothers and sisters. We have also been thrilled to see so many familiar faces whom we have met at other events in USA. Some of the brothers and sisters were at last weekend's Ethnic Jihad Minara Program. Insha'Allah, we will post a report on the Ethnic Jihad Program soon.

The cold Canadian winter also welcomed us here! We arrived in -2 degree weather. Then, it actually 'warmed' up on Saturday. Maybe it was the California sun!

Well, tomorrow is the final day of the Convention. Shaykh Abdallah will deliver another lecture with Shaykh Hamza translating. Then, Imam Zaid and Shaykh Hamza will have session together, insha'Allah.

Alhambra Productions will be in town for the Reviving Islamic Spirit concert which will be held to raise funds for the Pakistan Earthquake. Also, we will be here for the Knowledge Retreat with our beloved scholars.

P.S. Imam Zaid's lecture on Foundations of Islamic Civilization was very powerful. Shaykh Hamza's lecture of the Spirit of Al-Andalus was informative and enriching.

A meeting with James Yusuf Yee

During the recent Seerah Conference, we had an opportunity to meet with Chaplain Yusuf Yee. Even though we had met him on a few occasions prior to this event, this weekend allowed us to get to know Sidi Yusuf better.

He is humble and his personality exudes strength and fortitude. May Allah continue to bless him and his family.

Seerah Conference 2005

Another weekend, another event. This weekend saw some of the Alhambra Productions staff managing a booth at a local Bay Area event. During this long weekend, ISNA West conducted their 11th Annual Seerah Conference. ISNA West was very gracious to provide Alhambra Productions with a prime location for our booth. We would like to thank them for their support and hospitality.

We were pleasantly surprised to see so many familiar faces and new customers. There was a larger crowd than expected. All praises belong to Allah for allowing such a wonderful event.

Both of our teachers, Imam Zaid Shakir and Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, delivered wonderful lessons about the life of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him). We were also delighted to hear our dear friends Dr. Hatem Bazian, Chaplain Yusuf Yee and Shaykh Abdullah Idris provide their thoughts on the seerah. Other speakers were also invited to provide some insight on the seerah.

Besides the powerful speeches delivered by Shaykh Hamza and Imam Zaid, another highlight was a visit to our booth by Yusuf Yee. We had a great time meeting with him and listening to his story. We were also blessed with 2 book signing sessions with

Imam Zaid. At the end of the conference, Imam Zaid’s book Scattered Pictures was sold out! Alhamdulillah.

Florida Minara - Day Two Evening wrap-up

Alhamdulillah, we have just completed a successful event at the Florida Minara Program. We left the Grande Ballroom at the Tampa East Crowne Plaza with many memories.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers who assisted us and the Zaytuna Institute staff. They have all been helpful throughout the weekend. May Allah bless them for their efforts.

We would definitely like to thank our customers for their comments, feedback and kindness. Their patience was truly amazing. We also had the blessed opportunity to

make new friends. Thank you!

We would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to our new friend Erol from Turkey. He is one of the managers at the Crowne Plaza and he did a wonderful job tending to our requests.

After the event, the Alhambra staff were invited to a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner with Shaykh Hamza and Imam Zaid. We were again blessed to hear more words of wisdom taught to them by their teachers.

We can’t wait to visit the Tampa/Orlando area soon. Thanks again to all the organizers, volunteers, participants and customers who attended this blessed event! We truly enjoyed ourselves.

Florida Minara - Day Two: Evening wrap-up

The day started with a few of us meeting in the ‘prayer hall’ to pray the dawn prayer in congregation.

Imam Zaid led prayers with his usual gusto. He then proceeded to surprise us with an early morning lesson on the exegisis and translation of the verses he recited in the Fajr prayer.

We were moved by his explanation of the Mercy and Might of Allah. Insha’Allah, we

can give a brief outline of this beautiful lesson at a later time.

Florida Minara - Day Two: Morning update

Florida Minara - Day One

We are having such a wonderful time with the Muslim community here in Florida. We were pleasantly surprised to hear that many participants have come from as far away as New York and Chicago. We have already sold out several popular titles. And we still have one more day to go.

The highlight of the day was when Imam Zaid graciously sat at our booth for a book signing session. Immediately, there was a brother ready to have his new copy of Scattered Pictures to be signed.

Then, the announcement was made that Imam Zaid was conducting a book signing

session at the Alhambra Productions booth. The crowd swelled around the booth eager to meet Imam Zaid and have their books and CDs signed.

Imam Zaid, always the gentleman and the scholar, answered many questions including civic involvement, fiqh issues and general questions on how to improve one’s deen.

We can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow. Fajr prayers is only 5 hours away.

Insha’Allah, we will be praying in congregation near the Grande Ballroom.

It is a wonderful honor to have been invited by the South Valley Islamic Community to participate in their 3rd Annual Ramadan Community Dinner.

The event has traditionally been entitled ‘Feeding The Soul’.

Previous year’s events have included Imam Zaid as the keynote speaker. This year, Shaykh Ilyas Anwar will be the keynote speaker, insha’Allah. It is truly an honor to have been asked to be the sole vendor at this community gathering.

We would like to thank the SVIC for their invitation and sincerity! The SVIC is located

in Morgan Hill, California and serves the Gilroy, Hollister and San Martin areas as well.

Trip Report: Muslim Unity Day 2005

It was a day of FUN and excitement! Muslim Unity Day 2005 was held in Santa Clara, California at the Great America amusement park. This was our first major event in the San Francisco Bay Area since May 2005. All of the Alhambra Productions Event Staff were present to lend a hand. We had a blissful time as met our old friends, dear supporters and new faces. We would like to thank all of the organizers and volunteers of the Muslim Unity Day committee. We would especially like to thank all of those who stopped by our booth. We enjoyed the conversations and appreciate your feedback. All of us were overwhelmed by your enthusiastic response to our new releases as well as the exclusive leather art from Granada, Spain and Islamic calligraphy art from Haji Noor Deen. We are looking forward to the next Muslim Unity event!

We are now carrying Reflections of Pearls! This was the text that Shaykh Hamza taught in Madinah during the Rihla 2005. Here is a description of this wonderful book:

A consise and comprehensive collection of prophetic invocations and prayers.

Allah, Most High, says: “Remember me and I will remember you” (Qur’an 40:60)

We feel a sense of belonging, protection, and safety when we call out to Allah. When coupled with the powerful formulae of supplication (du’a) and remembrance (dhikr), this calling leads to a feeling of tranquility within our hearts and minds. With this goal in mind, Muslims scholars have compiled numerous books of supplications and remembrances from the Qur’an and Prophetic Sunna.

This is the third edition of Reflections of Pearls, a short compilation of Arabic supplications with their English translations and transliterations. Other sections include the etiquettes of supplicating, the 99 names of Allah, select blessings on the Messenger of Allah (saw), the virtues and excellences of certain chapters and verses of the Holy Qur’an, and the method of performing the Istikhara, Ishraq, and other optional prayers.
